Procopio Partner Travels to the White House with Ocean Discovery Institute to Receive Presidential Award

January 12, 2012

On December 10-13, Procopio Partner Ted J. Griswold traveled with representatives from the Ocean Discovery Institute to the White House to receive the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring for 2010. Procopio is a proud supporter of Ocean Discovery’s mission to use science exploration to engage urban and diverse young people, and applaud this well deserved recognition.

Ocean Discovery Institute was one of nine organizations receiving the Presidential Award, which has been awarded every two years since the Clinton Administration.  They are the first San Diego organization to receive the recognition.  The awards were personally presented to the honored organizations by President Obama at a ceremony in the Oval Office on Monday, December 12.

A non-profit organization, Ocean Discovery Institute uses science exploration to engage urban and diverse young people in three ways: education, scientific research and environmental stewardship. Through its programs youth are empowered to transform their lives and make a difference in the world as scientific and environmental leaders.

Griswold joined Ocean Discovery Institute's Executive Director Shara Fisler, Assistant Director Lindsey Goodwin, and students and mentors Anai Novoa (UCSC) and Ulisses Barraza (UCLA) in meetings at the White House and the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.  They had an opportunity to engage with organizations from around the Country that have been recognized for this Presidential Award.

Griswold has been on the Board of Directors of the organization for eleven of its twelve years and chairs the organization's Construction and Design Committee to build a new Living Lab in City Heights.  Procopio is a regular sponsor of Ocean Discovery programs and several Procopio attorneys provide pro bono assistance.

The awardees each received a $25,000 grant from the National Science Foundation and engaged in a series of meetings hosted by the National Science Foundation and Executive Office of Science and Technology Policy.  The meetings with the NSF and Presidential advisors were designed to develop new strategies for enhancing the quantity and diversity of students entering into science and engineering fields in the coming years.
