Kelsey Leonard Awarded Procopio’s Native American Practice Group Internship

July 22, 2013

San Diego, CA – Procopio welcomes Kelsey Leonard as a summer intern in the Native American practice group. She will be with the firm for seven weeks.  Ms. Leonard is a citizen of the Shinnecock Indian Nation (Long Island, NY). She received her undergraduate degree from Harvard University, where she served within various Native undergraduate organizations, including the All Ivy Native Council and the Harvard University Native American Program, and was the first member of the Shinnecock Nation to graduate from Harvard University. She then attended University of Oxford, England, where she received her Master in Science in Water Science, Policy and Management as well as completed a dissertation entitled, “Water Quality For Native Nations: Achieving A Trust Responsibility.” She was the first Native American woman to receive a degree from Oxford in the school’s 1,100 year history.
Ms. Leonard worked as an independent consultant in Western Pennsylvania with a variety of nonprofit organizations on environmental policy and water resource management projects prior to her current pursuit of a law degree. She is attending Dusquene University Law School (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania).
“Kelsey is an inspirational combination of high intellect, strong drive and dedication to her culture,” said Ted Griswold , Procopio partner and Native American group practice group leader.  “We welcome her to our group and appreciate the ability to share her experience with our tribal clients, while providing her valuable work experience with them. Her contributions will help us continue to provide our tribes and tribal-affiliated clients the highest level of legal services.”
Procopio's Native American practice group extends the firm’s tradition of giving back to the community it serves through its summer internship program for Native American law students or law students interested in Native American law.  Earlier this summer, Procopio had welcomed Stephanie Conduff, a Citizen of the Cherokee Nation who recently finished her second year at University of Oklahoma School of Law, as an intern. Also notable, Jaclyn Simi, the recipient of the firm’s winter 2012 Native American Internship, was recently promoted from law clerk at Procopio to full-time associate in their Labor and Employment and Native American teams in the downtown San Diego office.
Ms. Leonard will be exposed to specific Native American legal practice matters and given the opportunity to gain hands-on experience dealing with everyday legal issues facing Native American clients, including working with tribal governments, businesses and inter-tribal entities, as well as gaining experience working in a full-service business law firm.
