Procopio International Tax Associate Becomes First Mexican to Win Esteemed Latin American Academic Award

July 3, 2013

San Diego, CA – Procopio congratulates Pedro Corona de la Fuente, an Associate in the firm’s International Tax group, for receiving The International Fiscal Association (IFA) Latin American Academic Award. The award was presented in Mexico City and attended by approximately 350 judges, tax professionals and tax authorities. An international tax organization recognized for its excellence around the world, IFA has been in existence for 75 years and currently boasts 13,000 members from more than 100 countries.

The award is presented to the author of a paper on international tax issues relevant to the Latin American region. Papers are submitted anonymously from countries across the region and critiqued by a panel of five members from different countries. Mr. Corona’s paper, titled “La Residencia Fiscal de las Personas Físicas: Una Perspectiva Latinoamericana,” focuses on tax residency issues from a Latin American perspective. The award was presented by Manuel Tron, IFA President; Miguel Messmacher, Under-Secretary of the Treasury of Mexico; and Miguel Ortiz, President of IFA Mexico.

“I am honored and humbled to receive this award,” said Mr. Corona. “As the first Mexican to receive this honor, it was especially meaningful to be presented with the award during a meeting held in Mexico City. My colleagues and I work hard to stay at the forefront of international tax issues, and this sort of recognition is welcome validation of our efforts.”

For the past several years, Mr. Corona has been active in IFA, notably in the US and Mexican branches. His practice focuses on cross-border transactions, tax treaty planning, withholding obligations, reporting compliance on international transactions and assisting individuals and closely-held companies with cross-border transactions involving the U.S., Mexico, and other Latin-American countries. Procopio’s International Tax team continues to grow as it helps multinational clients understand and comply their tax obligations and minimize their exposure to double taxation by employing a wide array of planning techniques.

“Pedro is a vital contributor to Procopio and a team that is probably the strongest international tax group in Southern California. We’ve focused on recruiting the best and brightest to develop a group with incredible depth. This honor is not only a testament to Pedro’s dedication and hard work, but also reflects the values cultivated by our entire International Tax team," said Tom Turner, Procopio’s Managing Partner. “Mexico and Latin America are incredibly important to the Southern California economy, and we will continue to provide best–in-class services to our international tax clients.”
