Procopio Bids Farewell to Partner Retiring After 40 Years at Firm

April 22, 2013

San Diego, CA – Procopio bids a fond farewell to George L. Damoose, who has retired after serving as a tax attorney for almost 40 years. Damoose, a long-time partner at Procopio, joined the firm in 1976 and created its tax team, which now boasts over fifteen highly-skilled attorneys. During his time at Procopio, Damoose’s practice included all areas of income, estate, gift, property, sales, use and excise tax matters at the federal, state and local levels, including sophisticated estate planning techniques, the buying and selling of businesses, and structuring sophisticated business relationships.
“George has been a preeminent tax attorney, a respected colleague and a revered mentor to many whose dedication has contributed greatly to the success and growth of Procopio,” said the firm’s managing partner Tom Turner.  “He will be missed but we know this retirement is well deserved and wish him all the best.”
Damoose was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan and graduated cum laude from Harvard College in 1959. He received his law degree with honors from Harvard Law School in 1965 and became a Certified Law Specialist in Taxation, granted by the California Board of Legal Specialization, State Bar of California, in 1973.  He is a past Chairman of the Executive Committee of the California State Bar Tax Section, served as chair of the Taxation Subcommittee of the CEB Joint Advisory Committee and was a frequent lecturer on tax planning techniques to professionals, as well as the general public. Also notable, he was a founding professor of the University of San Diego’s Master of Science in Taxation program as well as served as adjunct professor at the California Western School of Law School. He has also been listed in Naifeh and Smith’s The Best Lawyers in America every year since its inception in 1983. Actively involved in the San Diego community, Damoose also served on the
Board of Trustees of the Bishop’s School, the Board of Directors of the San Diego Civic Light Opera Association, the Vestry of St. James by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, the Corporate Advisory Council of San Diego Opera, and the Board of Directors of San Diego Hospice & Palliative Care.  He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the La Jolla Music Society.
“Mr. George Damoose has been a leader in the tax legal profession for many decades in Southern California. His peers have recognized his skill and competence throughout his career and his long-term clients appreciated the level of his expertise,” said Patrick W. Martin, Partner, and current head of Procopio’s tax team.  “Most importantly for our law firm, his mentoring and profound thinking on difficult legal questions have helped our tax team raise the bar. His years of leadership in San Diego County will be missed.”
“I am proud of the younger attorneys whom I mentored and have seen grow over the years,” said Damoose. “I always demanded excellence of myself and tried to instill this expectation in them as well; I know they will continue to reflect the highest standards of practice and professionalism. The firm was my home for many years, and it is wonderful to have seen it flourish and grow to its position of prominence today.  Though I will be miss my colleagues both personally and professionally, I am looking forward to retirement.”
Damoose will spend his retirement at his home in La Jolla spending time with his wife, Cari, and their family, as well as golfing, traveling, playing bridge, reading, visiting with friends, attending performing arts and concerts and being involved in the community.
